If you’re wondering if you should get weight loss surgery, it may be because you’ve already tried multiple diets and weight loss programs and your weight hasn’t changed. Or you think you may be obese and are now experiencing the domino effects of this in the form of other health issues such as diabetes, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure. Here’s how you can figure out if bariatric surgery is right for you.
You have a BMI of 30 or higher
Your body mass index (BMI) is your weight-to-height ratio to determine whether you’re underweight, healthy, or obese. It will estimate your body fat and is calculated as an estimation to inform individuals about their health and if any action needs to be taken. If you are aware that your BMI is 30 or higher, you are eligible for bariatric surgery.
You have at least one obesity-related medical condition
If you’re aware of at least one medical condition that’s related to your weight, weight loss surgery can assist with improving the issue. Obesity-related conditions include diabetes, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, joint issues or cardiovascular disease.
You have attempted to lose weight over at least six months
Have you been sticking to a diet that is low in carbohydrates and unhealthy fats for an extended period and seen little to no improvement in your weight? And have you paired this with regular exercise? If the answer is ‘yes’ and you’re getting frustrated with not seeing the desired results, there may be an underlying cause for the stubborn fat. If your BMI indicates you’re eligible and you’ve tried other weight-loss methods, bariatric surgery may be your best and most effective option.
Exclusions from weight-loss surgery
When discussing the possibility of weight-loss surgery with one of our providers, existing medical conditions need to be considered. If you have a blood-clotting disorder, severe heart disease that prohibits the safe use of anesthesia or other conditions that increase the risks and side effects of anesthesia, you’ll likely not be a good candidate for bariatric surgery, in which case we can assist you with our metabolic program. It’s important that you disclose any and all existing conditions to your surgeon before finalizing your decision to have surgery.
